TRIO Academic Skills Specialist (Education Support Specialist II)

80%: Direct tutorial assistance in all areas of math for participants in the TRIO Student Support Services program. Provide quality individual all-levels tutoring directed towards study skills, note taking skills, time management skills, basic computer skills to students in LFCC’s TRIO Student Support Services program. Tutoring services are for college level courses necessary for the completion of associates degrees and certificates. Provide initial assessment of students’ academic skills and needs and develop individualized service plan for student success.

10%: Maintain detailed records and logs of tutoring sessions with TRIO students. Monitor students’ progress and maintain detailed notes and records. Submit weekly report of tutoring sessions and students served to Director. Make notes on all tutoring sessions in Blumen database.

5%: Work with TRIO staff, LFCC faculty, and other areas of the college to create a comprehensive academic plan of success for TRIO students. Provide feedback on students’ progress and needs to the TRIO Director and Advisor. Utilize the Student Information System to look at students’ current and past math courses, placement test scores, grades in math classes, in order to better form an individual tutoring plan.  Attend tutor training throughout each semester as established by the supervisory staff. Refer students to other offices and resources in the College, as needed. Speak with students’ instructors to discuss areas of need for tutoring, when applicable.

5%: Provide back-up assistance to non-TRIO students. Back up tutoring assistance should only be given when no TRIO students are in need of tutoring at the given time.

This position is scheduled for 40 weeks annually (15 weeks in the Fall semester, 15 weeks in the Spring semester and 10 weeks in the Summer semester).

Required Qualifications

  • Proven academic excellence and subject matter knowledge, which may be evidenced by training, experience, and/or an associate degree or prior experience, knowledge in tutoring, coaching, or mentoring in academic skills including study skills, time management, organization, test taking strategies, note taking, basic computer skills. 
  • Commitment to diverse learning populations
  • Understanding of different learning needs and styles
  • Excellent customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience tutoring students

Compensation: The compensation for the position is $15.00 an hour. The position is part time and as such cannot exceed 29 hours per week and is not eligible for health or leave benefits. However, the position may offer educational benefits through our professional development and educational assistance policies.

Fiscal year 2021 is one of the strongest years for the VCCS in recent state budget history. The G3 (Get Skilled, Get a Job, Get Ahead) program, which went into effect on July 1, 2021, provides funding for tuition, fees, books and other expenses for eligible low- and middle-income students who are pursuing degrees in high-demand fields, including health care, information technology and computer science, manufacturing and skilled trades, public safety and early childhood education. Participants will be required to give back two hours of community service, public service, or work experience for each credit hour in which they are enrolled. Lawmakers allocated $5 million in the upcoming budget year to hire 60 additional much-needed community college advisors to help new students enroll and successfully navigate the world of higher education. Additionally, the legislature approved money to give state classified workers and college faculty (full-time and adjunct) 5-percent pay raises, effective July 1, 2021. VCCS leadership said it will work to ensure that P-14 part-time employees also receive pay raises.
LFCC continues to prepare for the future; our facility and campus improvement projects include the newly completed Luray-Page County Center (Jenkins Hall), as well as the Hazel Hall Building currently under construction at our Fauquier Campus in Warrenton.
Lord Fairfax Community College, located in the Northern Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont regions, is accepting applications for adjunct, part-time faculty positions. Positions are appointed on a course-by-course, semester basis as needed. Responsibilities include teaching college-level courses, which may include distance learning, as well as on-campus teaching, during the day, evening, and weekends.
