About Us

The Winchester Area SPCA (WASPCA) strives to strengthen the human-animal bond and safeguard animals in transition. The local WASPCA has been serving the community since 1907. It serves as a source (public) shelter for Winchester City limits and a destination (private) shelter for Frederick and Clarke Counties. They have received the designation of being a no kill facility since 2014. Each year, they rededicate themselves to that commitment and save well over 90% of the animals entrusted to their care. The WASPCA has a strong commitment to reduce the unwanted pet population in the Commonwealth of Virginia. To this end, every pet adopted from the WASPCA is vaccinated, micro-chipped, and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. The WASPCA also works to prevent pet homelessness. Pet owners in need are provided pet food and financial assistance through the agency's Pets for Life program. The WASPCA partners with local businesses, schools, and civic groups for a variety of human education projects to include Adopt a Plush Pet Parties and our Paws & Pages reading program.
