Thanksgiving Day 5K in Stephens City Sells Out, Supporting Local Shelter

Stephens City, Nov 22, 2025 - The Frederick County Parks & Recreation is thrilled to announce that the Thanksgiving Day 5K, a cherished community tradition held at Sherando High School and Sherando Park, has reached its full capacity for the second consecutive year. This year's race, which promises an engaging route over pavement, trails, and grass, starting and finishing at the Sherando High School Track, has successfully registered over 1600 participants across the kids races and the 5K, marking a significant milestone for the event and the Winchester area.

Andrew Keefauver, Recreation Superintendent at Frederick County Parks & Recreation, expressed his excitement about the event's growing popularity and its positive impact on the community. "We are overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm from the community for the Thanksgiving Day 5K. With over 1600 participants registered for the kids races and the 5K, we believe this is the largest race in the Winchester area to date. This event is not just a race; it's a community celebration of health, family, and giving back," said Keefauver.

The Thanksgiving Day 5K is more than a race; it is a beacon of community support and generosity. This year, the race will benefit WATTS - Winchester Area Temporary Transitional Shelter, an organization dedicated to providing temporary housing and support for the homeless in the Winchester area. The overwhelming participation and the funds raised through this event will significantly contribute to the shelter's operations, offering a glimmer of hope and support to those in need during the holiday season.

Frederick County Parks & Recreation's commitment to fostering community spirit and promoting healthy lifestyles is evident through the organization and success of the Thanksgiving Day 5K. The event not only brings together families and fitness enthusiasts from all over the region but also highlights the community's collective effort to support a noble cause.

As the Thanksgiving Day 5K continues to grow and set new records, Frederick County Parks & Recreation remains dedicated to providing exceptional recreational opportunities and events that enrich the lives of the community members. The success of this event is a testament to the department's hard work, vision, and commitment to making Frederick County a vibrant, healthy, and compassionate place to live.
