Byrd family selling The Winchester Star to Ogden Newspapers.  More than 120 years of local journalistic heritage and tradition came to an end Tuesday with the announcement that the Byrd family will sell The Winchester Star and all other Byrd Newspaper holdings to the Ogden Newspapers, Inc., a family-based publishing concern based in Wheeling, W. Va.  This agreement, will take effect on April 1, 2018. (For more information see article from The Winchester Star on Wednesday, March 7, 2018)

Shenandoah University will honor Women's History Month with a series of film screenings, panel discussions and guest speakers that celebrate women's leadership and empowerment and highlight women's issues.  (For schedule of dates and times for the series presentations please see the article in The Winchester Star on Friday, March 9, 2018) 

Apple Blossom Festival, Battlefields Foundation obtain tourism grants.  The grants are designed to help local and regional tourism entities attract more visitors. The next round of grants will open on April 10, with a June 26 application deadline.  (For more information about these grants - see The Winchester Star article on Friday, March 9, 2018)

The Frederick County Recycling is accepting online orders through April 13 for discounted rain barrels and compost bins in an attempt to help residents conserve water. (For more information see The Winchester Star article of Friday, March 9, 2018)

County tax relief deadline for elderly, disabled set for April 2.  This relief is based on various qualifications.  Commissioner of Revenue administrative assistant Barbara Hummer told The Star that the income of county residents is based on their 2017 earnings.  The county recommends that people file for tax relief in person if it's their first time doing so.   (See the article in The Winchester Star on Saturday, March 10, 2018 for more information)
